Hello fellow pet friend!
Did you ever have a great new idea for pet product? Something that had a real functional benefit for your best friend as well as being cute and fun? Something that is dramatically different from anything else on the market?
So did Nancy Kerrigan, an avid dog lover and inventor. Nancy's dog, Maggie, was guilty of something we've started to call "inhalation eating" -- Maggie literally inhaled her food. Ate it way too fast -- gulped it down quickly without chewing or pausing -- and sometimes for Maggie, that led to gagging or vomiting. While as dog owners we sometimes rationalize that as "the way of the wild" it just can't be healthy to eat that fast. Nancy wanted something better.
So she did some research along with some friends. The folklore solution is to put a rock or a tennis ball in the bowl. That seeemed really gross and unsanitary, not to mention unsafe. Nancy and her friends learned about bloat and the other risks that come from eating too fast, and that fired her up even more. When she looked on store shelves for better answers, she was amazed that no one had really put much creative thought into this very common problem. Products that were on the market to help slow down Maggie were either unattractive or just didn't look like something Nancy wanted to put on her floor and feed Maggie out of.
Nancy knew she could do better. Working with some industrial designers, pet experts, vets, and manufacturers, Nancy and her team came up with a dog bowl that is a breakthrough in slowing down the pace of eating for dogs.
In addition to slowing down dogs, Nancy's invention is winning major kudos from vets and dog behaviorists for being the first dog bowl that helps with portion control. With the novel design of the bowl, owners can be sure they're not accidentally over-feeding their dog. Pet obesity is a major issue today, and DogPause is the first dog bowl that can be part of a broader program of portion control and being smart about food quantities.
Long Tail Pet Products is the corporate entity bringing Nancy's incredibly effective (and cute!) dog bowl to the market. Just as Chris Anderson has pointed out that online commerce is enabling the "long tail" of consumer demand and commerce, we think there is a "long tail" of supply of great new products that can and should be created using online communities and commerce.
We think we've got a product that can help millions of dogs and their owners, and we need your support to get the word out. With your help, we can build this business from the ground up, making great products for dogs (and cats). So please, spread the word about Long Tail Pet Products and our great new product, DogPause!

What's next for Long Tail? Well, we're looking at a variation of our bowl that will slow down cats, as we've learned from vets that eating too fast and vomiting is a very common problem in cats too! And, of course, given our love of great products, we are always on the lookout for the next big thing in pet products. If you think you've got a great new pet product, don't hesitate to let us know about it!
